In the electronics industry, when a small piece of silicon is cut from a large wafer, large amounts of debris are often generated. Often these materials are discarded, but thanks to a study currently underway at Northeastern University and Osaka University, these silicon scraps are expected soon to be used in high-performance lithium-ion batteries. Scientists start with ordinary silicon dust, wash away impurities (such as through the cutting process will be used in the coolant), made of about 15nm thick powder and then wrapped in carbon, and ultimately made the battery anode.

Tests show that lithium-ion batteries using this anode material can reach 1200 mAh / g capacity (mAh / g) with a cycle time of more than 800 cycles.

For outsiders, this figure may not be inconspicuous. But in fact, the result is 3.3 times that of traditional graphite anode.

The researchers pointed out that if the mass production, recycling scale expansion will be more simple, the cost of the anode can become quite low. They predict that the annual dust generated by the industry will be enough for the anode material worldwide.

Details of the study have been published in the recently published Scientific Reports journal.
