Since May 3, the Shanghai air pollution index has risen, the PM2.5 concentration has soared, and the entire city has been “covered” in mild pollution. The PM2.5 hour concentration once exceeded the standard by three times. Zhang Quan said that according to preliminary research by the environmental protection department, motor vehicles and aircraft are the main sources of PM2.5 in Shanghai, accounting for about 25%.
“Most of the air pollution comes from motor vehicles.” Zhang Quan said, “The contribution of motor vehicle pollution to air pollution in the central city is about 50% and 60%, and in some areas it may even be 76%.”
Due to the large number of enterprises in Shanghai, it is also a large port city with a large amount of transportation, and it is difficult to eliminate highly polluting vehicles. Zhang Quan revealed that the number of highly polluting vehicles in Shanghai has exceeded that of Beijing.
For a large number of highly polluting vehicles, Zhang Quan said that it will speed up the elimination through new replacement, mandatory elimination and monitoring and maintenance systems.
Zhang Quan also revealed that Shanghai will raise the emission standards for motor vehicles and strive to adopt the “National V” motor vehicle emission standards next year.
It is understood that the national V standard is equivalent to the EU's European V standard, the EU has been implemented since 2009, and its restrictions on motor vehicle emissions such as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons are more stringent. After the implementation of the new standard, the sulfur content of the fuel will be greatly reduced, which can reduce the PM2.5 emissions in the exhaust gas.
